Diary of a Decade of Agony is a translation of the classic Marathi book Aswastha Dashakachi
Diary. Published for the first time in 1989. It’s been 30 years now and it still strikes the chord.
And it will continue to do so in the future.
This is the story of a youngster, who at the age of 16, decides his aim of life to be an activist
working for a nation and start travelling around the country while working on education, youth
organizations, rural development, various agitations… whilst he writes, reads and contemplates..
The book is an Indian panorama with the various people, he encountered in his journey, coming
alive in the pages of this book – Rehabilitative work in cyclone-hit Andhra Pradesh, work in
Punjab during Khalistan Separatist movement, agitation in Assam against Bangladeshi
infiltrators, separatist movements in North East India, tense situations in Kashmir, Anti-
reservation movement in Gujarat, Ram Janmabhoomi issue, Shah Bano case and subsequent
issues regarding Hindu-Muslim relationship, Indira Gandhi assassination, Politics in Delhi,
Farmers movement…this is the study of all these issues by being there and actively participating
in it. This is not merely a reportage. It does not only contain self-witnessed, self-experienced
details of events but it is also an in-depth discovery of India. This book is not only limited to
raising questions in a bookish intellectual way, but this is an effort to find a solution to these
problems. This is the diary of exploration of Indian questions suppressing all castes-creed-
classes-sects-languages-sexes but through an Indian lens. This is an introspective diary of a
wise activist, compelling introspection and optimism about the Indian future. After 10 years of
arduous work without thinking of career, fame, power, money or family, Shri. Avinash
Dharmadhikari got selected in 1986 as IAS. Thus becoming Karyakarta Adhikari from
Karyakarta. And in order to have these Karyakarta Adhikari in all fields including
Administration, he resigned from IAS in 1996 and started educational work of Chanakya Mandal
Pariwar. He fought elections … Only to oppose corruption… He agitated for the implementation of
RTI and to seek solutions to citizens difficulties. His struggle for national work continues…
